Up and Down Waterproof LED Wall Sconce

An up-and-down sconce lights the wall rather than the garden, and that is the whole architectural point of it. Two beams leave the fitting in opposite directions, washing the surface above and below in a pair of soft triangles that give a flat facade depth after dark. Used along a run of wall or between windows, a set of them turns a blank elevation into something worth looking at from the street.

The body is compact and unfussy, finished in a matte tone that disappears against the wall in daylight so only the effect is noticed at night. The LED is integrated rather than lamp-based, which removes the holder that usually corrodes first on an exterior fitting, and it is sealed against rain driven onto the wall from any angle. Nothing on the face needs opening for maintenance.

It suits house fronts, courtyards, garden walls, gateposts, driveways and covered terraces, and it works either singly beside a door or repeated at even spacing for rhythm. Spacing matters more than brightness here: too close and the triangles merge into a stripe, too far and the wall reads as patchy. Mains wiring outdoors should always be installed by a qualified electrician on a properly protected circuit, and the back gasket should be checked whenever the fitting is removed and refitted.
