Splitting kindling with an axe is the part of a wood fire that sends people to a hospital. This tool removes the swing entirely: the log sits over a fixed blade, and a mallet or a second log drives it down, so both of your hands stay well away from the cutting edge throughout. It is faster than an axe for small work, and far more predictable in a shed or a doorway where a swing is impossible.
